The Alex Del Rio Foundation was established in December 2008 by Miriam Fernandez, Alex’s mom. Miriam was motivated to start this foundation after the loss of her son, Officer Alex Del Rio, who died in a tragic accident serving his community. This foundation was created to honor the sacrifice and service of Alex and help improve the lives of children in South Florida. The Alex Del Rio Foundation is a public charity exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
Alex was a role model. He was health conscious and believed in promoting a positive self image. He was a caring individual and was passionate about serving and providing a safe and supportive environment to his community. He left our world too soon. To continue with Alex’s dreams, Miriam will embark on a journey by seeking to energize, educate and enrich the lives of the youth in our community. The mission of the foundation is to motivate the community, to empower children and families by providing scholarships. Also many community events will be held. Areas of safety, health and law enforcement will be presented through the generous investment of financial support, time and devotion. Miriam feels a strong connection to the City of Hollywood and the South Florida Community. During her time of need; they have been there for her and she’s committed to helping those in need during times of crisis-like the one that she has personally experienced.
It’s our hope that the Alex Del Rio Foundation and its Christian principles will help teach our youth that “dreams can come true, that hope, character and hard work can and will result in a better life. “A Matter Of Honor – 2513” has been adopted by the foundation as its official slogan.
In establishing the Alex Del Rio Foundation, Miriam Fernandez extends her already active involvement in the educational field through the Miami Dade County Public School System by serving students, parents, teachers, administrators and community members.
